Motu I/O 24

As discussed, I would tell you something more about the gear I have in my studio called “Lost Highway Studio”.

First of all, the studio is a hybrid studio, meaning I combine analogue gear, mainly my mixer, with all the rest which is digital.

One of the backbones I am using in the studio is the Motu I/O  24.

The 24I/O adds 24 channels of high quality analog input and output to my studio.

A quick feature summary according to the MOTU website:

  • Expandable — connect up to four 24I/O units to a PCI-424 audio card for a total of 96 inputs and outputs. Use as many simultaneous channels as host software and computer allow.
  • 100% compatible with all MOTU AudioWire interfaces. Mix and match MOTU audio interfaces (up to four at once) to meet your exact I/O needs.
  • Drivers for Mac OS X and Windows — provides multi-channel 24-bit I/O for all leading audio software on both computer platforms.
  • Word clock — resolves to time code or any other external time base via MOTU’s Digital Timepiece synchronizer or any other standard digital audio synchronization device.
  • Resolves directly to SMPTE time code (LTC) with fast lock-up and sub-frame accuracy.
  • DC-coupled TRS outputs — can be used with Volta to manipulate and sequence voltage-controlled modular synthesizers from a host DAW.

Paisley’s DiMarzio PAF Pro Pickup

To give you some more details about the rear pickup of the Richie Sambora Signature Edition Black Paisley, the DiMarzio PAF Pro pickup, I have created this post.

DiMarzio (full name: DiMarzio Musical Instrument Pickups, Inc.) is an American-based electronic manufacturing company, famous for its guitar pickups. The company also produces miscellaneous guitar accessories, such as cables, straps and hardware. They have manufactured the PAF pro.

Seth Lover holding his first humbucker

P.A.F. or just PAF is the world’s first humbucker guitar pickup, invented by Seth Lover in 1955 as an engineer for Gibson. (PAF stands for Patent Applied For)

The PAF pro is a so called “Medium Power” humbucker. This means it is not high power such as DiMarzio’s D-Sonic or Super Distortion. This would not really fit a Sambora Stratocaster, to my opinion.

DiMarzio puts it as

“The PAF Pro was created when chops-intensive playing was first starting to happen, and high-gain amps and rack systems were getting popular. A pickup was needed that combined a lot of presence and  cut with an open-sounding PAF vibe.”

Dimarzio paf proThe sound of a PAF Pro combined with a single-coil pickup in the middle position adds the versatility of the traditional glassy twang to any guitar. Using a five-way pickup switch and backing off on the guitar’s volume control gives you a range of tone from over the top to slashing funk rhythm.

This is a great building block pickup, because it’s effective in many different situations.  As a bridge pickup, it’s really effective with single-coils, because it won’t drown them out with too much power, and it’s bright enough to blend in tone-wise. And that is exactly how Richie uses it.

DiMarzio PAF Pro Humbucker Pickup Specifications

  • Wiring: Standard four conductor
  • Magnet: Alnico 5
  • Output: 300mV
  • DC Resistance: 8.40K
  • Year of Introduction: 1986

The Paf pro was used by many other guitarist such as Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, Jason Becker etc.

Here is some more info in the PAF Humbucker and on the website of DiMarzio you will find more info too.

Valueing a Richie Sambora Fender Paisley Stratocaster

In the last couple of years I have seen a lot of discussions on the price to pay for a Richie Sambora Black Paisley Signature stratocaster. Naturally, a lot of people have thought about the price to pay.

Some people have added the so called emotional value to it, increasing the price. Some people have offered one with damage, some of the Paisleys I have seen are in mind condition, and I have even seen Chinese replica’s of the original.

Richie live on Paisley

Richie live on Paisley

First of all, there were approximately 200 made of the Black Paisley Strats. All of these were crafted in Japan, not in the USA or Mexico. This means that you can check the serial number of the Paisley on the Fender Website.

If the serial matches, then you can continue. If the serial does not match, be sure to contact Fender, to see if you have made a mistake or that there was an exception in the serial registration process at Fender. However, I have nor seen this issue, so it is kind of unlikely that this might happen. If you would be buying one, which can be a very good investment, please be sure that you get an excellent picture of the serial first, before going to the seller. This enables you to check the serial upfront. Preparation is half the work!

What else is important? First of all the overall conditions. I have seen one example on sale for 2900,- euro which was in absolute terrible condition.

In terrible condition

In terrible condition

Large parts of the paint were damaged and the print underneath the varnish was damaged. This can never be restored and thus seriously compromises your investment. Only if you are just willing to play on this guitar, this might waive your objections to buy. Do keep in mind that you should not pay more that, let say 1500,- to 1750,- euro for one like this. And, bare in mind, I am only talking about the paint work.

If the paint work is ok, check the hardware. Some guitar players have more so called “skin-acid” in their hands. This means that the hardware such as the tremolo (nickle) will rust and will be less pristine.

Paisley Body

Paisley Body

I admit, this can be replaced, but one has to make sure that the tremolo looks silver and the knobs are black. The tuning knobs are Gotoh with Pearloid Buttons. These are more rare than others. Also the volume knobs, which might show wear and tear, are supposed to be black with white numbers on them.

Head Stock

Head Stock

The head stock is crucial in identifying if the guitar is original or not. It should have white knobs on the head, branded “Gotoh” on the back. The head should only have “Fender Stratocaster” on the front side and Richie’s signature”  Also, the truss rod hole should be black on the inside. The strings should be guided underneath the chrome bar. The head always has a top lock, chrome, with black bolts and is mounted through and through the neck with 2 bolts.

Generally, all the hardware should look the the pictures above. This is my guitar which is in extreme mint condition.

Then, there is the wear on the fet board. Naturally, if somebody has played on the guitar, this is always the case. Since the wood is relatively light of color (Maple), it shows. It can be restored by a craftsman, but should always be done with extreme caution. The neck should also have the signature star on it and should have the Richie Sambora Signature. If not, the neck is not the original neck. Period.

If all this works out, and also the back of the body has little buckle-rash (scratches caused by belts and buttons), it looks like a nice deal.

Back Side

Back Side

Now, what would this be worth? Since the numbers are declining (some of them hav been stolen, lost in a fire, smashed…..) the prices are going up. They are getting more and more rare. Fact of life.

However, Richie himself has sold some prototypes or personal ones. These are the guitars crafted by Fender for Richie. The serial will not be there or will be different. These ones are typically very expensive and contact Fender first before buying one. Typically, the are worth more than 8000,- euro.

If this is not the case, which is more likely, a pristine example would do at least 2900,- to 3100,- euro.

I have left open the comments section on this page. If you would like to have my opinion on yours, either for sales or for fun (so owners and Paisley lovers can keep in contact), please leave a message.

thanks!

New pick-up for SA-2

Like I already wrote in my first story about my new ESP LTD SA-2 Richie Sambora was that I was not too thrilled about the sound coming from the neck pick-up on my new guitar. (read it here). The pick-up’s installed on the SA-2 are ESP LH-100’s. I have seen and heared better quality. The neck pickup is roughly 14K ohms and that the bridge pickup is 15K ohms.  They are two-wire pickups with a copper base.

So after doing some investigation regarding new pick, and being a fan of the DiMarzio sound, I again went back to my local music store, Timmer Muziek. I knew that he had some pick-ups in store. Dropping by to order some other stuff (will come to that later… 😀 ), I decided to see if there were any of my favorite pickups in store (DiMarzio).

I ended up buying the DiMarzio PAF classic (DP195). I initially aimed for the Gibson Burstbucker Pro, but these were a little bit more expensive and harder to find…and not DiMarzio. I decided to try the DiMarzio instead. I bought it at the same price as where I could buy it at Musik-Produktiv or Thomann so that was exellent.

Especially since I did not have to place a mail order or drive all the way to Germany…. and I like buying gear at local shops!

DiMarzio PAF Classic Neck

DiMarzio PAF Classic Neck

Now, hardest part was not to get the pick guard off.  I have done this approximately 4 times now, since I tried to insulate/shield the wires of the pick-ups.

Shielded?

Shielded?

naturally, no luck with that. Anyway, I started open-heart surgeory.

Inside the SA-2

Inside the SA-2

You can see the quality of this picture is not too good. This had to do with a) the quality of my camera/phone and b) the nice lighting in our studio, which is more for ambiance than for making good-quality pictures.

After getting the pick-guard off, I checked where the wires of the neck element were soldered. The read wire was soldered to “hot” and white to “ground”. I took a picture of it but it was too bad. The wirering can be traced back to the ESP owners-manual.

The Knobs

The Knobs

Anyway, I soldered this old pick-up out. Then I had to figure out how the hell I should connect the 4 wires of the DiMarzio to the 2 locations of the old LH-100. I read the installation manual for the DiMarzio PAF Classic and it turned out that the LH-100’s were placed into a “Standard humbucking parallel wiring” schema, that requires
  • The the RED and the WHITE wire should be soldered together;
  • The GREEN and the BLACK should be soldered together.

Subsequently,

  • RED/WHITE should be soldered as the “hot” connection;
  • GREEN/BLACK should be soldered as the “ground” connection.
The removed LH-100

The removed LH-100

So, that was pretty easy. I took by 25 Watt soldering device and it took me approximately 15 minutes. Be sure not to blow cold air to your weld after soldering it. Just let it cool normally, do not try to be in a hurry. If you do blow and try to cool it, you might end up with a so called “cold weld”, wich can break easily.
Anyway. I tried the guiter after re-installing the pick guard again… The sound was amazing. It is everything that fits with this SA-2. it is THE Richie sound. Also, the feedback I got from the neck pick-up was gone! Amazing.
So, next month I will be replacing the bridge pick-up with a DiMarzio PAF classic.

Martin OMC-41 Richie Sambora

No Folks, I have not bought another new guitar. There is one Richie Sambora Signature guitar which I cannot afford (yet), or I do not have the money for it. I mean, it is too darn expensive!
OMC-41 Full Size

OMC-41 Full Size

The guitar I am talking about the is Martin OMC-41 Richie Sambora Acoustic-Electric Guitar in sunburst.

Ritchie selected an OM body style for the 6-string limited edition Martin acoustic-electric guitar bearing his name. With a rounded cutaway, the OMC-41 offers balanced tone and outstanding access to the upper frets. The premium solid tonewoods chosen also show a connoisseur’s appreciation for tone: tops of Italian alpine spruce for brilliance and richness, and backs and sides of Madagascar rosewood, the tone-wood considered by many to be closest in appearance, projection and clarity to now-rare Brazilian rosewood.

Appointments selected and created for this guitar are equally stunning. The Style 41 top abalone inlay, stands out against the top’s unique vintage tobacco (yellow to brown) “Sambora” sunburst. Top, back, headplate and fingerboard are bound in grained ivoroid, and all but the top feature inset black/white fine line inlays. The grained ivoroid end piece and heelcap have identical black/white fine line accents. The distinctive pyramid belly bridge with Stauffer point is carved from black African ebony. A black polished and beveled pickguard protects the top.

Unique inlays highlight both the black African ebony fingerboard and headplate. Beginning at the 1st fret and continuing to the 17th, small abalone hexagon position markers on the fingerboard are bordered with exclusive mother of pearl, which are in turn accented on both sides by delicate black line inlays. Richie Sambora’s inlaid signature appears between the 19th and 20th frets. The headplate showcases an exclusive “heart and cross” Martin torch inlay in abalone and mother of pearl inspired by a bracelet designed by Richie Sambora’s ex-wife (at the time of designing: wife), actress Heather Locklear.

A low profile neck, (1-11/16″) diamond volutes at the base of the headstock and the Martin stamp on the back combines a modern feel with classic appearance. Gotoh gold tuning machines with small knobs, and a bone nut and compensated TUSQ saddle provide smooth tuning and precise intonation. The bridge pins and endpin are fashioned from fossilized ivory and topped by colorful pearl dots.

Each Martin OMC-41 Sambora Signature Edition guitar comes with an interior label personally signed by Richie Sambora and C. F. Martin IV. In addition, each guitar will be individually numbered in sequence with the edition total. The edition size of either model will not exceed two hundred instruments.

My new LTD SA-2

Yes! Finally! It took a while before I had the opportunity to buy the LTS SA-2 Richie Sambora guitar. I have been chasing this guitar, as stated in my other post, since approximately may 2008. The guitar did not come on sale though the european sales channels from end of July. So, I had to wait.

About 2,5 weeks ago I ordered the SA-2 at my local music store, who always gives me very excellent service and is a person who knows his way around. I got the call yesterday and picked up the guitar at the store. (Yes, I did buy a case, strap and straplocks too!).

This is the first picture of the guitar after mounting the straplocks.

LTD SA-2 Richie Sambora

The guitar could not be placed into a standard Strat case, so we had to find one that did fit.

The back of of the guitar shows an interesting detail. First of all, the brand of the guitar is not really visible. yes, we all know it is an LTD made by ESP and designed by Richie Sambora and Chris Hofschneider. But does it show? Well actually it does. Check the back of the head:

There is the ESP logo, the serial number and, unfortunately, the “made in China” mark. Sorry for the poor quality of the image, but I made the pictures from my Blackberry.

Looking at the back of the body, you can really see what the design is. It has a great logo on the back:

Pretty cool, eh? Well, the guitar also has an inscription on the neck. here is the picture too.

And, as the last picture, the head of the neck. It has the sambora logo on it. Here it is.

Well, this is it for now. I do have a lot of info on the sound, but that will be for the next post. Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

If you would like to read more reviews on the SA-2, here is the link to Harmony Central. If you own one, it is always nice to leave some feedback.

Richie Sambora Strat Wirering Diagrams

I am a fan of the Richie Sambora Stratocaster models. Very good sound, excellent quality, etc.

Anyway, I decided to post some of the wirering diagrams of the guitar on my site.

The diagrams are for the strats with the mid boost switch. Not all of the ones have that. Also, the tremolo might differ here and there but I hope it can help you.

You can find it

My New Richie Strat!

Yesterday, I was browsing Ebay.com in search of a good bargain. One never knows what you can find. I stumbled into a 1996 Richie Sambora Signature edition Fender Stratocaster, on sale for app $750,-. A Mexican version, that is. However, since I already have a mexican version of one of these guitars, I have experienced that it plays very well and sounds excellent on my Marshall power amp.

Since the Euro is very strong these days I calculated that if I would make a bid on this guitar, I would be able to buy it for a lower price.

Black Stratocaster

It looks excellent and it has all the features I like on a guitar: Humbucker on the back, 2 single coils on the front and center, including a floyd rose tremolo. After making a bidding, I managed to buy this beauty for 500 euro including shipping and shipping ensurance. Pretty neat, eh? The guitar is in minty condition and has a upgraded pearliod pickguard which really brings this strat to life and sets it apart from a normal strat.  Neck is like new, smooth and straight.  Pickups sound fanstastic with great tone.

Features:

  • Dimarzio PAF Pro Humbucker Pickup
  • HSS : Humbucker / Single / Single Coil Pickup Configuration
  • Floyd Rose II Tremolo Bridge and tremolo bar – get ready for those dives without loosing tune!
  • Rosewood fretboard / Maple neck
  • Alder Body

Here are some pictures:

Here you can find a Wireing Diagram of a mexican Richie Sambora Stratocaster with 3 noiseless pickups (not with the humbucker)

Paisley Stratocaster

A lot of rumours have been going over the internet about the Richie Sambora Signature Stratocaster “Black Paisley”. I hope to give you enough information about this guitar to clear your mind.

Black Paisley

First of all, only 200 pieces of this guitar were made by fender Japan in 1996 for the 50th anniversary of Fender. This is also enscribed on the back. Fender can check your serial number. There are some chinese copies of the guitar, but that can really be noticed when playing, as well as by the overall quality of those guitars.

I own one since 2006, which I bough second hand from a man in Germany. He had received it as a present from his girlfriend in 1997. Het had bought it brand new. Since he was an absolute guitar lover, the guitar is in ab-so-lute mint condition. I hardly play on this guitar, only when I feel like it. For example in studio recordings or high profile gigs. Every time I play it, it is a real thrill.

I will not go into detail about the price I paid for this baby, but a really good one would do app 3500,- euro. I have seen some reliced versions of this guitar (1 to be exact). This was in such a bad condition, it is like wrecking a ferrari… it cannot ever be reversed, due to the print. If you ever see one, do not pay more that 1000 euro if it is in this terrible condition:

It has the following set up:

  • Body: Alder
  • Neck: Maple (bolt on) with Floyd Rose Lock Nut
  • Machine Heads: Gotoh with Pearloid Buttons
  • Fretboard: Maple with Star Inlay (12″ Radius/305mm)
  • Number of Frets: 22
  • Pickups: RS-Special Single Coil (neck & middle),
  • Rear pickup DiMarzio PAF Pro
  • Custom Wound Humbucking (bridge)
  • Controls: Master Volume, Tone & TBX
  • Bridge: Floyd Rose Original
  • Hardware: Chrome
  • Pickup Switching: 5 Way
  • Scale Length: 25.5″ (648mm)
  • Width @ Nut: 1.65″ (42mm)
  • Color: X50 – Black Paisley

The guitar’s pick guard is in the same pattern as the one on the body:

This print is also on the back of the guitar

back side

The detail is very beautiful. Also, the neck of the guitar is made to the size of Richie’s hands, whose are the same size an mind (I have once had the opportunity to compare!).

Another picture of the body

The fact that the guitar has an original Floyd Rose tremolo makes it very special. A lot of the strats have the standard Fender tremolo and do not have the humbucker on the back. This one does.

It plays really well and has the exact sound I like. It is one of my many Fender Stratocasters. The only thing it lacks is the mid boost botton, which my other Richie Sambora Signature Strat has. That is the only downside.

If you are able to buy one under 2500,- euro, I would say, do not hesitate and just buy the sucker. Treat it well and NEVER EVER sell it again, or, maybe just to me. I am interested in a second one! 🙂

Richie on his Black Paisley

Anyway, I also know that there are a lot of discussions going on on the web about this guitar. I even spotted by own guitar on “What’s up with Richie” forum. I can tell you, my guitar is really as beautiful as it is on the picture. The sound is even better. Anyway, I found another picture of Richie with the black Paisley, so I decided to post it. Richie also starred in the Fender Brochure for the 50th anniversary. In the gallery below you can see one of the rare pictures that were taken from him.

Here is one of the rare occasions where Richie played a paisley. It is a movie on YouTube.  The only downside is that the movie has been translated to French…. Sorry :-S

LTD Richie Sambora SA-2

Yes, I am in the process of buying a new guitar. Since I am a big fan of Richie Sambora, I have already bought a number of the Richie Sambora Signature Edition Stratocasters. They are absolutely fabulous.

Nevertheless, LTD, which is owned by ESP, has brought a new Richie Sambora Signature Edition, the SA-2. As for the design goes, you either love it or you sincerely hate it. For me, it was the first option.

SA-2

Well, I do not have it yet, but I am looking forward to buying it. Now, most of you know that LTD is not the high end of ESP, but nevertheless…. cool.

here’s a pic of Richie playing it live:

Richie Sambora

The ESP SA2 Richie Sambora is the latest addition to ESPs long line of artist endorsed models. Richie Sambora and his long-time associate and expert luthier Chris Hofschneider designed the guitar. The SA2 features a comfortable basswood body with a fast maple neck and a rosewood fretwood. The LH100 pickups produce that tone that is so well known on hit records around the world. Plus they added a double locking bridge with ESP tuners for great stability. The unique SA2 will become a classic.

Technical Info

Construction/Scale : Bolt-On/25.5 inches

The 22 nicely flat, extra-jumbo frets and low action again tick all the right rock boxes. The SA-2 has a good feel. The neck is fixed to the body with a slightly offset four-screw join, and the headstock bears Richie’s name on a bespoke piece of three-ply pearloid scratchplate material.

Richie Sambora II

In this youtube movie below you can see Richie play a similair guitar. Do mind the really smooth guitar play buy the way. This guy still amazes me after all these years. I mean, I have seen guitar heroes, but they are always so serious and focussed. Richie certainly plays relaxed.

LTD SA-2

In order to provide you with some background information, I have gathered some links to sites writing aout the SA-2:

See Richie in action on his SA-2, during a live performance in a show called The View

I found a great pic on the web, where Richie performs with the SA-2. It can be clearly seen that the SA-2 has no tuning knobs on the headstock. It has the Floyd Rose machine head. More information abou that can be found at the website of Floyd Rose and on the speedloader page. The website also confirms Richie as one of the artists using Floyd Rose.

Also note that it only has 2 knobs. My guess is that they are both for volume, not for tone.

Anyway, Enjoy the gallery below!
